Onions! a culinary trip through time.....
Class Endeavour had an eye watering visit from Mickey Oldroyd on Thursday! Mickey shared many Chef's tips as well as some scientific facts!
Did you know that in Egypt, onions can be traced back to 3500BC. In Egypt, onions were considered to be an object of worship. The onion symbolised eternity to the Egyptians who buried onions along with their Pharaohs. The Egyptians saw eternal life in the anatomy of the onion because of its circle-within-a-circle structure. Onions are also known for the antiseptic qualities; in India, as early as the sixth century B.C., the onion was celebrated as a medicine – a diuretic, good for digestion, the heart, the eyes, and the joints. The Greeks used onions to fortify athletes for the Olympic Games. Before competition, athletes would consume pounds of onions, drink onion juice, and rub onions on their bodies. Roman's believed the onion could cure vision, induce sleep, heal mouth sores, dog bites and toothaches.
And a scientific fact - did you know onions produce gas? When cut open the onion produces a volatile sulfur gas. This gas wafts up from the onion and reacts with the natural water in your eye to form sulfuric acid, which brings about the familiar stinging sensation!
We also tasted both a raw and cooked onion - comparing the two. Frying the onion causes yet another reaction, resulting in the formation of bispropenyl disulfide which has a sweet smell and a sweet taste.
We never imagined to learn so much from an onion!
